About Us
The premier urologic group in Maryland, Chesapeake Urology Associates (CUA), is
comprised of more than 40 top urologists and 200 employees, serving patients in more
than 20 offices throughout central Maryland. CUA was formed in September, 2006,
when, after two years of discussion, the 14 physicians of the original CUA merged with
15 physicians in Maryland Urology Associates (MUA) and seven physicians from
another respected urologic group.
The merger was conceived and completed by Dr. Sanford Siegel, President of CUA. Dr.
Siegel and the leaders of the two other groups, Dr. Thomas Smyth and Dr. Brad Lerner,
shared a vision of expanded services and better control over the group's practice in the
current healthcare environment. The merger not only increased the size and breadth of the
group, but also improved and extended services and permitted the development of
stronger relationships with hospitals and insurance companies.
Chesapeake Urology's Centers and Services include:
- More than 20 offices in Baltimore City and Baltimore, Harford, Howard, Carroll and Anne Arundel Counties.
- More than 10 Ambulatory Surgery Centers - including anesthesia services in seven centers.
- Summit Clinical Research - fully accredited research coordinators conduct clinical research studies in five offices in this division of CUA.
- The Prostate Center - this unique new center provides state-of-the-art Image-Guided Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IG-IMRT) in a beautiful setting designed to enhance patient comfort.
- The Continence Center - a freestanding center for the treatment of incontinence staffed by fellowship-trained physicians as well as dedicated physician assistants. The Center's team also includes nutritionists, an acupuncturist, a physical therapist and sexual therapists.
- Division of Advanced Laparoscopy and Robotics - fellowship-trained physicians provide state of the art treatment for renal, prostate and bladder cancer. CUA urologists performed the first robotic cystectomy in Maryland and the first robotic prostatectomy in a Maryland community hospital. Seven CUA physicians are trained to do robotics and many more perform laparoscopy.
- The Chesapeake Urology Scholarship Foundation has been founded to help young men and women fulfill their dreams in medicine, nursing and other associated medical fields by providing grants.
CUA's commitment to quality urological services extends far beyond its many centers.
Nine CUA physicians play a leadership role by heading the urology services in their
respective hospitals. Its physicians are active politically as a member of two coalitions,
Maryland Urologists for Patient Access and Care and the Maryland Coalition for Patient
Access and Care. Both of these coalitions seek to allow urologists to continue practicing
medicine in a manner that is responsive to maintaining the highest quality of patient care.
CUA also is involved in community events, and sponsors the three-tiered "Great Prostate Cancer Challenge" to raise funds for prostate cancer research, raise awareness for this disease, and provide screening opportunities to identify men with prostate cancer. The program consists of Free Community Prostate Cancer Screenings, beginning in August and continuing into October, in cooperation with several Baltimore area churches. In addition, a Patti LaBelle special benefit concert is scheduled for
September 6, at Baltimore's Pier Six Pavilion. The Great Prostate Cancer Challenge 5K Run and 1 Mile Fun Walk will take place on Sunday, September 14 at St. Joseph Medical Center. After the race, free prostate screenings will be offered to eligible participants. Funds raised are donated to the American Urological Association Foundation for prostate cancer research and awareness.
Chesapeake Urology is dedicated to its patients and the community it serves. Its doctors
and staff strive each day to make CUA into the most respected urology practice in the
country.
