Joel E. Abbott, D.O.

Dr. Abbott joined Chesapeake Urology in September 2016 after completing a prestigious Endourology/Laparoscopic fellowship at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine.  The fellowship focused on the treatment of large and complex kidney stones as well as robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery for benign and malignant diseases.

In addition to practicing general urology for men and women, Dr. Abbott specializes in providing comprehensive surgical, medical and preventive care for patients with kidney stones.  His treatment goal is to render patients 100% stone free and provide medical therapy after surgery to keep patients stone free.  Dr. Abbott performs highly specialized procedures to treat large and complex kidney stones including Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL), Tubeless PCNL and Minimally Invasive PCNL (MIP). He is a pioneer in performing these procedures in an ambulatory setting with selected patients sent home on the same day as surgery. He also focuses on robotic-assisted laparoscopic techniques for upper urinary tract reconstruction, as well as holmium laser enucleation for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Dr. Abbott served in the United State Marine Corps for five years before becoming a high school science teacher in Las Vegas. In 2005, he returned to school to pursue his doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.) degree and subsequently completed a six year residency in urologic surgery.  After residency, Dr. Abbott was selected into the highly competitive Endourology/Robotics fellowship at the University of California where he further honed his expertise in advanced, minimally invasive surgical techniques.

Dr. Abbott is a dedicated and passionate teacher and has served as a clinical instructor in the Department of Osteopathic Surgical Specialties at Michigan State University since 2011. He was also appointed an associate physician, Department of Urology, at UC San Diego School of Medicine.

An ardent researcher, Dr. Abbott has received numerous awards and recognitions for his work, earning him the American College of Osteopathic Surgeon’s Erwin Literary award, the Michigan Osteopathic Association’s Scientific Research award, the American Urological Association’s Dr. Edwin L. Thirlby award, the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons Resident Achievement award and the Mark Cummings, Ph.D. award for outstanding leadership in medical scholarship. During his time in military service, he also earned the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for professional and leadership achievement.

Dr. Abbott’s work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed medical journals including The Journal of Urology, The Journal of Endourology, Urology Annals, and The Canadian Journal of Urology. He has given numerous presentations in local, regional and international arenas on his research and work in the minimally invasive treatment of large kidney stones and PCNL/Tubeless PCNL surgery.

He is a member of a number of professional organizations including the American Urological Association, the American Association of Clinical Urologists, the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, the American Osteopathic Association and the Endourological Society.
