Joel Abbot DOChesapeake Urology recently welcomed urologist Joel E. Abbott, D.O., a specialist in the diagnosis, treatment and management of large and complex kidney stones, to the practice. Dr. Abbott sees patients in Chesapeake Urology's Glen Burnie office located at 806 Landmark Dr., suite 118, Glen Burnie, MD 21061.

The addition of Dr. Abbott to the Chesapeake Urology physician team demonstrates the practice’s forward thinking commitment to providing specialized care to patients with kidney stone disease, particularly those individuals with large kidney stones.

In addition to practicing general urology, Dr. Abbott provides comprehensive surgical, medical and preventive care for patients with kidney stones. Dr. Abbott performs highly specialized procedures to treat large and complex kidney stones including Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL), Tubeless PCNL and Minimally Invasive PCNL (MIP). He performs many of these procedures in an ambulatory surgery setting with selected patients sent home on the same day as surgery. His treatment goal is to render patients 100 percent stone free and provide medical therapy after surgery to keep patients stone free.  He also focuses on robotic-assisted laparoscopic techniques for upper urinary tract reconstruction, as well as holmium laser enucleation for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Dr. Abbott most recently completed a prestigious Endourology/Laparoscopic fellowship at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. The fellowship focused on the treatment of large and complex kidney stones as well as robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery for benign and malignant diseases.

Prior to becoming a urologist, Dr. Abbott served in the United State Marine Corps for five years. He received his doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.) degree from the Western University of Health Sciences, and completed his residency in urologic surgery at Michigan State University, St. John Providence Health Osteopathic Division, where he also served as chief resident.  After residency, Dr. Abbott was selected into the highly competitive Endourology/Robotics fellowship at the University of California where he further honed his expertise in advanced, minimally invasive surgical techniques.

Dr. Abbott is also a passionate teacher and previously served as a clinical instructor in the Department of Osteopathic Surgical Specialties at Michigan State University and also as an associate physician, Department of Urology, at UC San Diego School of Medicine.

He has been recognized with numerous awards and honors for his work in and out of medicine, and his research in large kidney stones has been published in a number of national urologic and medical journals.
