(Owings Mills, MD, July 31, 2009)  Dr. Sanford Siegel, President and CEO of Chesapeake Urology Associates, is proud to announce that the recipient of the 2009 Robert Kellam Memorial Scholarship is Valeriya Aranovich, a 2009 graduate of Pikesville High School.

Ms. Aranovich is entering her freshman year in Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

The Robert Kellam Memorial Scholarship is a personal award that Dr. Siegel established in 1990 to honor the memory of his childhood best friend who died at a young age.  The scholarship is based on need, academics and athletics, and is awarded to a deserving student from Pikesville High School, of which Dr. Siegel is an alumnus.

Ms. Aranovich, who immigrated to the U.S. as a child with her family, has overcome the challenge of learning a new language and excelled academically.

In accepting the award, she wrote, "It is also an honor to be recognized for the work that I do.  As the daughter of immigrants, and an immigrant myself, I had a hard time in school since the beginning;  I was far behind my classmates because I did not know English and I learned to read very late, still struggling with sounding words out in middle school.  But my family has always valued education as the greatest tool we have to succeed in life and they push me to achieve despite adversity.  I want to continue doing as I have always done in college as well.  After that, I am considering either medical school or grad school for biomedical engineering.  Thank you, once again, for helping me reach my goals."
