The Minimally Invasive Surgery and Robotics group at Chesapeake Urology are among the Mid-Atlantic region’s leading specialists in laparoscopic and robotic procedures for a broad range of kidney, bladder, and prostate conditions and diseases.
Adrenalectomy refers to the surgical removal of the adrenal gland. Depending on the location and the preference of the surgeon, this can be done using robot-assisted or traditional laparoscopic techniques.
How is Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy Performed?
This procedure is performed under general anesthesia.
Four to five small incisions will be made into the abdomen to give the surgeon access to the entire cavity.
The adrenal gland is visualized using the magnification of the camera so it can be dissected and removed through a small abdominal incision.
The adrenal gland is freed from surrounding tissues. Blood vessels to the adrenal gland are visualized and clipped.
Benefits of Minimally Invasive Adrenalectomy
As in kidney surgery, these less-invasive techniques allow for equal disease control with smaller incisions, less scarring, less pain, and quicker recovery.
Most patients are able to leave the hospital in 1 to 2 days and return to normal function in 2 to 4 weeks.
