Commander, United States Navy, retired
Background
Dr. James Masterson is a board-certified general urologist who joined Chesapeake Urology in August 2021, serving patients in Annapolis and throughout Anne Arundel County, MD. Dr. Masterson focuses on all areas of general urology in men and women, including BPH/enlarged prostate, erectile dysfunction, hematuria, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, low testosterone, infertility, and kidney stones.
A distinguished U.S. military medical professional, Dr. Masterson served as a Navy urologist in Yokosuka, Japan; Bethesda, Maryland; and Jacksonville, Florida. He was the only U.S. military urologist in “mainland” Japan and traveled extensively to U.S. military bases throughout Japan to provide urologic care. In Jacksonville, FL, urologic service requirements greatly diminished during the initial part of the COVID pandemic. Consequently, he volunteered to be the fleet liaison for those initial months to coordinate hospital care with the U.S. Navy fleet mission. Dr. Masterson retired from the Navy as a Commander before joining Chesapeake Urology.
Dr. Masterson is a 1996 U.S. Naval Academy graduate. After graduation, he completed a tour as a Navy helicopter pilot and then as a fixed-wing instructor pilot before attending medical school. Dr. Masterson has published multiple articles as well as a book chapter on kidney stones and has presented extensively at national and international conferences on urologic topics. He is a member of the American Urological Association, the American Association of Clinical Urologists, and the Society of Government Service Urologists.
