Dr. Richard Silver joined Chesapeake Urology in April 2020. Prior to joining Chesapeake Urology, Dr. Silver was a urologist and partner with Associated Medical Professionals in Utica, New York. He was a member of the Board of Directors of AMP and served as the Chair of the Section of Urology at the Mohawk Valley Health System.
Dr. Silver received his Bachelor of Arts degree in natural science from Johns Hopkins University and was elected into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree, with Honors, from The University of Chicago and was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. Dr. Silver then completed a residency in general surgery and urology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and a fellowship in pediatric urology at the Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. In addition to his medical, surgical, and urologic education and training, Dr. Silver received his law degree from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University, New York, NY, where he focused his studies on intellectual property and constitutional law and is a member of the NY Bar.
His laboratory research interests focus on 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme necessary for normal male genitourinary tract development and prostate growth. Consequently, he has clinical interests in related abnormalities, such as hypospadias, undescended testes, and intersex conditions associated with ambiguous genitalia in children and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in adults. His clinical research interests include the non-surgical management of varicocele in adolescent boys and young men.
Dr. Silver sees patients of all ages in the Brandywine office and enjoys taking care of patients with a wide variety of urologic problems. His clinical interests include urinary tract infection, BPH, prostate cancer, stone disease, voiding dysfunction, bedwetting, hypospadias, undescended testis, vesicoureteral reflux, and urinary tract obstruction. His surgical interests extend from his fellowship training and include complex urinary tract reconstruction.
Dr. Silver is Board Certified by The American Board of Urology. He is an elected Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Society for Pediatric Urology. He is also a member of the Society for Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons, the Society for Fetal Urology, and the American Urological Association. Dr. Silver has published 35 peer-reviewed articles and written 13 book chapters.
